PITTSBURGH LOCAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
14 June 2004

The meeting was part of the
first annual AFTRA Awards Night, which was introduced with a performance by
Grammy-winning song-writer and performer Carol Espy.
President Martino welcomed
the members and guests at 7:35.
MINUTES.
MOVED, seconded, and
unanimously approved to approve the Minutes of the last Membership meeting.
FINANCE. (See separate report) Mr. Roberts provided a summary
of finances, and noted that complete financial records are available to
members, upon request.
MOVED, seconded, and
unanimously approved to receive the Financial Report.
EXECUTIVE
DIRECTOR REPORT (see separate report)
ASSISTANT
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR (FREELANCE) REPORT.
(See separate report) Ms Steidl noted in particular the new TalentGuide, with
free web pages available this year to all members of the Local.
She
then introduced Krestin Bryan, a Carnegie-Mellon Drama student who will intern
with AFTRA this summer.
NOMINATING
COMMITTEE. Chairman Boal reported the
results of the 2004 elections:
1)
All incumbents who sought
re-election to the Local Board were re-elected.
2)
Newly elected to the Local Board
were Marc Field, Leslie McCombs, Nancy Mimless, and Steve Stone.
3)
Mark Roberts was elected as Pittsburgh’s representative on the
National Board. Paul Martino was elected as Alternate.
SCHOLARSHIP
COMMITTEE: Mr. Roberts reported this
year’s Scholarship Committee actions. Three first-time awards of $1,000 were
granted to Kristin Hayes, daughter of Harold Hayes; Ryan Howell, son of Jess
Howell; and Danielle Martino, daughter of Paul Martino. $500 was granted to
each of three previous awardees: Brittany Bouchette, daughter of Ed Bouchette;
April Effort, daughter of Elaine Effort; and Steven James, son of Dave James.
Serving on the 2004 Committee were Ms Chapek, Mr. Early, Ms Ruoti; Mr. Roberts
chaired. Mr. Roberts reminded the members that the scholarship fund is named in
honor of Dan Mallinger, long-time member, President, and Executive Director.
AFTRA
AWARDS.
Top performers in their
respective fields were recognized as follows:
Top Producer(s) Award went to
TJ Lubinsky and Henry DeLuca of TJL Productions and was presented by Mike
Frazier (WWSW)
Top Elected Official was
presented by John McIntire (former host, Night Talk) to State Senator Jean Orie
and accepted by her legislative aide, Joseph Smith.
Best Community Ally Award was
presented by Chuck Aber and Maggie Stewart to Gary Rotstein and Chris Rawson of
the Post Gazette.
Top Broadcast Manager Award
was presented by Clifford Charlton and Anji Corley to Ronald Davenport, Jr. all
from WAMO and accepted on his behalf by LaTonya Washington.
Lifetime Achievement Award
was presented by John Garry to Alan Boal for his years of service to the local
and labor movement in Allegheny County.
Special Recognition was given
to the dedication and hard work of Susan Chapek as she leaves Pittsburgh for a new city.
President
Martino concluded the evening by thanking the hard-working members of the Awards
Committee: Joe DeStio, Chuck Aber, David Early and Helena Ruoti.
