Unions, Advertising Industry Jointly Issue RFP for Study

Of Alternate Methods of Talent Compensation

9 Consultants from Industry, Academia Invited to Respond

New York and Los Angeles (May 17, 2006)—The advertising industry’s Joint Policy Committee on Broadcast Talent Union Relations (JPC) and Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) invited nine consultants from industry and academia to respond to a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a joint study of alternate models to compensate performers for their participation in commercials that appear in television and radio as well as in the growing array of new media. Approaches resulting from the study will be offered for consideration in the bargaining process surrounding the advertising industry’s collective bargaining agreement with SAG/AFTRA, which expires on October 29, 2006.

In guiding consultants, the RFP states, “SAG, AFTRA, and the JPC realize that any Study must be comprehensive and take into consideration the myriad of interests of all the parties - performers and their unions on the one hand and advertisers and their partners - advertising agencies, both large and small, production companies, talent payroll services, casting directors, and cost consultants - on the other hand.”  The RFP then identifies detailed criteria that alternate compensation models must meet. The full RFP is available at http://www.aftra.com/press/rfp.pdf.

Recipients of the RFP were jointly selected by the JPC, SAG, and AFTRA from a pool of consultants who submitted credentials in response to a previously published Request for Qualifications.
