GEORGE EISENHAUER, VOICE OF KDKA-TV

July 17, 1926 - April 7, 2007

PITTSBURGH (April 9, 2007) If you lived in Pittsburgh and you're thirty-something or older, you know George Eisenhauer's voice. Eisenhauer, a native of Armbrust, Westmoreland county, died over the weekend at his Maine home. He was 80.

Eisenhauer's resonant baritone was the trademark sound of KDKA-TV from the time he arrived at WDTV, KD's predecessor in 1949, until his retirement in 1987. He was the first full-time booth announcer in local television. And also one of the last.

A former President of the Pittsburgh local of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, Eisenhauer was a strong voice for unionism in our industry. He served as a national officer and was a delegate to many AFTRA conventions.

Bill Cardille, another past-president, called Eisenhauer "One of the most gentle human beings in our business, with a kind word about everybody... an extremely fine gentleman". Past-president Alan Boal echoed Cardille's sentiments calling Eisenhauer "a talented announcer and singer, and a real gentleman".

Eisenhauer performed at the Pittsburgh Playhouse and in summer stock at the White Barn Theatre and the Odd Chair Playhouse.

Eisenhauer is survived by his wife, Karen, a son and five daughters.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
