PITTSBURGH (February 28, 2008) If there's ever a reason to use a phrase like "the end of an era", this is it. Myron Cope has died. He was 79. The cause of death was listed as respiratory failure. Myron was a fixture on the local airwaves from the late sixties until his retirement in 2005. He spent thirty-five years as the color commentator on the Pittsburgh Steelers radio network. A loyal member and friend to AFTRA and its members, Myron is remembered by those who worked with him as a true gentleman. To Quote The P-G's Gene Collier, "Yoi we'll miss him". "And double yoi." Many people have weighed in with their thoughts and rememberances of Myron. Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato: "Like so many Steeler fans, I grew up listening to Myron Cope and his unforgettable voice and style. Myron symbolizes everything that is great about southwestern Pennsylvania, and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Today, the entire Steeler Nation mourns the loss of a great man and a great Pittsburgher." Former Steelers spokesman Joe Gordon: "There's no one in my experience in over forty years in sports who did more preparing for his broadcasts, whether it was a Steelers game or his talk show. He was just so diligent and a perfectionist. If he made a mistake it just gnawed at him." WDVE's Sean McDowell in a local TV interview said, "He was the nicest guy, He was the most approachable guy. During Steelers season, that would be the first call I would listen for in the morning with Jim and Randy - Myron calling in after the game the day before. I just remember Myron being such a gracious guy, no matter where I saw him". And that's no gorgonzola. Please click here for Gene Collier's touching obituary from Post-Gazette online.
