PITTSBURGH (February 12, 2008) Former KDKA Sports Commentator Bill Currie has died. Currie suffered from several strokes in recent years and died of a brain hemorrhage late Monday in Yelm, Wash., at his daughter Margaret's side.

Currie, probably Pittsburgh's most flamboyant sports personality ever, worked at KDKA-TV from 1971 until 1990. An exceptional writer and storyteller, Currie treated sports less seriously than many of today's sportscasters, relegating it to the status of the "funny papers", where he felt it belonged.

His style and personality attracted viewers in droves, including many women who were not typically sports fans.

Bill Currie was 85.
