NATIONAL PRESIDENT, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR PITTSBURGH (September 7, 2009) The Fall Membership Meeting of the AFTRA Pittsburgh Local is scheduled for Monday, September 14th, 6:30 PM, at the Steelworkers Building on Stanwix Street downtown. Our honored guests include Roberta Reardon, AFTRA National President and Kim Roberts Hedgepeth, National Executive Director.
Both Reardon and Hedgepeth are delegates to the AFL/CIO Convention, which is being held in Pittsburgh this year. “Organizing in the Digital Age: How can performers succeed?” will be the topic of discussion. It's rare that both of the union's top leaders are in Pittsburgh together, and all members should attend and take this opportunity to meet them and hear what they have to say about the future of our industries and our union. At the 62nd AFTRA National Convention in Chicago last month, Reardon — who was elected to her first term as National President by Convention delegates in 2007 — was re-elected by unanimous acclamation to a second two-year term as National President. “I am extremely honored to serve once again as your National President,” Reardon told the delegates. “Together, we’re going to forge a great 21st century digital union. This past week, we planned the future, not just for the people in this room but for AFTRA members around the country, and I am so proud.”
Also joining us will be AFTRA National's Second Vice President (and President of the Los Angeles Local) Ron Morgan. Ray Bradford, AFTRA's National Director of Equal Employment Opportunities will be at our meeting to present WPXI's Jonas Chaney with the American Scene Award® for best Television News Feature. “Examining the new wellness philosophy of inner city students by focusing on goals for long range success, Here’s To Life, produced by Pittsburgh’s WPXI-TV, is a half-hour special highlighting a seven year campaign designed to promote health and well-being of Pittsburgh High School students. WPXI partnered with the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Minority Health to give viewers an insightful perspective on the urgent need to initiate the Healthy Class of 2010 project”. Administered by AFTRA’s Equal Employment Opportunities Committee, the American Scene Awards® are made possible by a generous grant from the AFTRA Foundation, and have been presented since 1986.
