HONSBERGER CELEBRATES THIRTY YEARS ON KDKA
PITTSBURGH (March 2, 2009) NewsRadio 1020 KDKA's Fred Honsberger celebrated 30 years with the station Thursday, Feb. 26 during a special anniversary broadcast hosted by Mike Pintek and former KDKA morning host John Cigna. The day was commemorated by both the city and county, proclaiming Fred Honsberger Day throughout the land.
Fred came to Pittsburgh and KDKA in 1979 from KYW in Philadelphia where he worked as a news anchor. During his long career, Fred has won many awards for his on-air work including the prestigious Dupont Award given to the Group W Radio reporters who covered the Three Mile Island nuclear disaster in 1979. Fred has been named Best Talk Show Host by the March of Dimes Achievement in Radio Awards in 1997 and 2003. He also won the A.I.R. Award for Best Afternoon Show in 2003 and 2005. The Associated Press named Fred's show the Best Radio Talk Show in Pennsylvania in 2004, 2005 and 2006 and Talkers Magazine has selected Fred as one of talk radio's Heavy Hundred for four-years running.
