MEMBERS MEET FOLLOWED BY POPCORN AND A PILOT

By Mark Roberts

PITTSBURGH (June 16, 2010) AFTRA Pittsburgh held its Annual Membership Meeting Monday night at the United Steelworkers Building. The large turnout was treated to an evening of fellowship, entertainment and, of course, a bit of union business.

President Paul Martino opened the meeting at 7:10 PM.  He announced the results of the just-completed Board election. Those newly elected are Freelancers Nathan Hollabaugh, Karen Baum, Peacoe Reilly and Wali Jamal.  Returning incumbents are David Flick, Randy Kovitz, Alan Boal and Mark Roberts.  ESPN Radio elected Ken Laird as its new shop steward.

Martino and Treasurer Mark Roberts presented five Dan Mallinger Memorial Scholarships to children of members of our local.  The Scholarship Committee chaired by Marc Field made the selections based on academic performance as well as need.  All funds for the scholarships come from member donations as well as income from our annual production of Off the Record.

Following the meeting, Associate Executive Director, Chris Lacy introduced member Jason Coll's digital production of Munhall, starring Tim Brady, George Wendt and Tom Atkins.  Munhall is a slightly bent comedy revolving around the life of the owner (Brady) of a dinner theater in Munhall that no longer serves dinner and barely does theater.  The dysfunctional family of employees and friends stumbles through an existence that is at once foreign and oddly familiar.  We know these people, although we might not admit it to everyone.

Munhall was produced under an AFTRA Experimental contract.  Written and produded by Jason Coll.  Directed by Daniel T. Green.  A discussion about producing in Pittsburgh followed the show with Coll and Lacey moderating.
