   AFTRA Pittsburgh's membership got together last night and were treated to an award-winning documentary. Former WPXI producer Robin Beckham was presented with AFTRA's American Scene Award.

   The National Board of Directors of the AFTRA meeting in videoconference plenary session this weekend in Los Angeles and New York approved establishing Los Angeles as the site of the union's national headquarters. Some departments, such as News/Broadcast, will remain in New York. .

It is with great sadness thet AFTRA marks the passing of one of its long-time members, Glen "Bumper" Morgan. Morgan, whose real name was Frederick Merrin died last Wednesday after suffering a heart attack at the age of 57.

At last evening's Membership meeting, results of the election for Officers and Freelance Board members were announced. Paul Martino returns as President of the Pittsburgh Local. Incumbents David Early and Mark Roberts were returned to their posts of Vice-President and Treasurer, respectively.

Step by step, little by little, those nasty noncompete clauses that have handcuffed broadcasters for years may be headed the way of the teletype machine. Noncompete clauses, as I've written before, are boilerplate provisions in most broadcasters' contracts that restrict them from working for other stations.

Since the initial expiration of our local commercials codes, members and staff from the Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Tri-State locals have been working to create a new regional commercials code that will replace the various local codes now being used.

An anti-union minority led by morning anchor Bob Bruce failed yesterday in their attempt to defeat the union shop provisions of the WPXI contract. In a vote conducted by the Labor Board, the group fell short in its efforts to gut the union security provisions of the station's collective bargaining agreement.
