   For the eleventh year in a row, Pittsburgh's radio elite were in attendance for the March of Dimes Achievement in Radio awards. Presenters for this years awards were the Pirates broadcast team Lanny Frattare and Greg Brown.

   AFTRA made the last of a series of senior executive appointments over the past year with the selection of an experienced labor executive as the new National Director for News and Broadcast who was introduced to the National Board of Directors at the Oct. 28 plenary meeting.

   Tuesday, in a unanimous vote, HB #2905 sailed through the PA House Commerce Committee. Our brave band of advocates, including a radio statio owner and a non-AFTRA broadcast TV newsperson, were there to button-hole the committee members prior to the vote.

   In national voting just completed, members of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and Screen Actors Guild overwhelmingly approved a two-year extension to the Commercials Contracts with the advertising industry covering advertisements on TV, radio, the Internet, and New Media.

   The Pittsburgh AFTRA office is inviting all performers in our region who are not members of AFTRA or SAG but who audition for off-camera or on-camera work, to take a quick and confidential survey, on-line.

   On August 26, the Joint SAG/AFTRA National Board of Directors voted by a majority of nearly 95% to recommend a two-year Extension Agreement of the 2003 SAG Commercials Contract and the 2003 AFTRA Television and Radio Recorded Commercials Contracts which would be expanded to cover all commercials, made for, or exhibited on New Media.

   It took a while, but broadcast legend Eleanor Schano has finally put it all down on paper. The Pittsburgh AFTRA pioneer, and former Board member, has penned a fascinating book full of history—personal history as well as television history.

   The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), Screen Actors Guild (SAG), and the advertising industry’s ANA/AAAA Joint Policy Committee on Broadcast Talent Union Relations (JPC) today announced a tentative agreement on a two-year extension to the Commercials Contracts that cover advertisements appearing on TV, radio, the Internet, and New Media, that would run through October 29, 2008.

   After a few minor setbacks, the Pittsburgh local moved to its new offices this weekend.

   In its final meeting Friday, June 9, the Nominating Committee counted votes in the just-concluded election. Attending were Committee members Chuck Aber, Dan Maha, Larry John Meyers, and Mark Roberts, Chair.

   The AFTRA Scholarship Committee met on June 6, 2006 to consider application for the current year. Attending were: Marc Field, Chair, Helena Ruoti, Don Wadsworth, Mark Roberts, John Haer, Executive Director.

   Calling for an end to violence against media workers and for action to protect the rights of journalists and media workers in Iraq, unions representing broadcast and print journalists and media workers in the United States and Canada are joining together today with the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) to mark Iraqi National Press Day as a Global Day of Solidarity.

   The advertising industry’s Joint Policy Committee on Broadcast Talent Union Relations (JPC) and AFTRA and SAG invited nine consultants from industry and academia to respond to a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a joint study of alternate models to compensate performers for their participation in commercials that appear in television and radio as well as in the growing array of new media.

   On May 6 and 7, professional photographer Becky Thurner and makeup artist Patty Bell provided their services to AFTRA members only at a special discounted rate. The event was sold out.

   Each year, the Pittsburgh Radio and Television Club (PRTC) recognizes outstanding individuals in the communications industry. Award winners in the three areas of Radio, Television and Allied/Agency are honored for their significant contributions to the Pittsburgh market.

   A Wednesday meeting date has been set for local AFTRA Broadcast leaders according to John Haer, the Pittsburgh Local's Executive Director and Stoney Richards, Chair of the Broadcast Steering Committee.

   As previously announced, the advertising industry’s Joint Policy Committee on Broadcast Talent Union Relations (JPC) and representatives of Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) met this past Saturday, April 8, at Guild headquarters in Los Angeles to begin preliminary discussions in advance of the expiration of the current Commercials contract on October 29, 2006.

   Dr. Maria Simbra has won the 2006 National Association of Medical Communicators Award of Excellence. The National Association of Medical Communicators established the NAMC Award to acknowledge excellence in broadcast health communications.

   February 13, 2006 proved to be a good day for SAG, AFTRA, and all Colorado union members. In the long and arduous fight between pro-union supporters and Right-to-Work advocates, Colorado has long been considered a key battleground state.

   As you know, your dues are based on your AFTRA earnings during the previous year. Each year, to help determine the correct amount, members are asked to complete and return an income statement after reviewing their W-2 forms.
